The Story Behind the Art

Gary Cota is a Sculptor & Visual Artist whose work explores the natural world through form, movement, texture, and color.

Working primarily in sculpture, wood carving, painting, and illustration, he is drawn to the character and individuality of wildlife, landscapes, and natural forms.

Wood is an especially expressive medium for Cota. Its grain, texture, and natural character become part of the creative process as he creates carved reliefs and freestanding sculpture.

Cota studied Fine Art at the Rhode Island School of Design and developed decades of experience as a designer, illustrator, and woodcarver. He later operated his own hand-carving business, creating more than 1,000 carved signs throughout New England. That experience continues to inform his fine-art practice, combining craftsmanship with his broader artistic vision.

Based on Cape Cod, Cota draws inspiration from the coast and natural environment, as well as wildlife, landscapes, travel, and the places and experiences that shape his view of the world. His artistic perspective extends well beyond a single place.

Cota is a juried artist at the Cape Cod Art Center and a member of the New England Sculptors Association. His work has been exhibited at the Cape Cod Art Center, Cape Cod Museum of Art, and Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, a Smithsonian-affiliated institution. His work has received multiple juried awards, including Best of Show honors at the Cape Cod Art Center and First Place in Sculpture in the Warming Seas exhibition presented in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Through his work, Cota seeks not simply to reproduce what he sees, but to capture what first made him stop and look—the movement of an animal, the character of a landscape, the texture of wood, or a particular quality of light. His goal is to create art with its own presence and invite viewers to see the natural world from a different perspective.

The Journey

My Approach

My work is inspired by the natural world and the forms, movement and character that make each subject unique. Through sculpture, wood carving and painting, I explore the relationship between what I observe and how I interpret it as an artist.

Wood is an especially expressive medium for me. Its grain, texture and natural character become part of the creative process as I shape each piece, working to capture a sense of movement, strength or quiet beauty.

Whether I'm carving wildlife, creating a sculptural relief or painting a landscape, my inspiration often begins with something that makes me stop and look more closely. My goal is to translate that experience into art that has its own presence and invites others to see the natural world from a different perspective.
